Early this morning at 12:30 a gunman entered Club Decatur, a bar on Decatur St. and Iberville St.(near the Houe of Blues), and shot three men and injured two women (with bullet fragments). The latest violence highlights the fact that the Big Easy is on edge as its Katrina evacuees return to a city that has a murder rate approximately ten times the national average. The National Guard and state police who were called up in June in response to the murders of five youths in a vehicle in New Orleans are scheduled to leave this December. Mayor Nagin will have to redouble his efforts to make the citizens and visitors of the Crescent City safe and thereby make Louisiana's cultural capital a magnet anew for conventioneers and other cash-spending tourists.

Pretty simple fix:
If one is not present to experience trouble in a bar, one will, more than likely, not get shot at. Forget Nagin redoubling efforts; allow the citizens to have a little 'bang-plop' and the crime rate will go down. It happens every time, statistically Cf: John R. Lott, More Guns, Less Crime.
It's unfortunate that the citizens have to be armed to be safe. However, I fear that dealing with a Darwinian ethic sometimes necessitates following such a course.

At least we can actually be safe by being armed; mind you, it's no panacea, but it's much better odds than not. As to the Darwinian ethic, we live in it, unfortunately, no matter how many of us disagree with it.
Jon, it is a shame that "survival of the fittest" often rules on the street: however, I'm sure that you are maintaining a sphere of safety around you and your dear family.
