Justice: Speaker Not Under Investigation

Earlier today, when asked by reporters whether he was being probed in the Abramoff affair, Speaker Dennis Hastert said that he had not received such a notice from Justice and that they would have to ask Justice. When so queried, Justice Department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos said, "Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department." Hastert has since called a contrary ABC's report "absolutely untrue" and demanded a full retraction.

Good.  Now, we can go on to more important questions about Hastert.  For instance, was he smoking dope when he angrily denounced the raid of Jefferson's office?  Or, should we make sure that Hastert is not fraudulently misrepresenting his legal residence as Illinois, because I'm pretty danged sure right now that it's on Pluto.  Or, is this Hastert guy a Democratic operative because I'm pretty sure that the Democratic party could not pay him enough for the damage he's done to the Republican party.

It's definitely getting tumultous on Capitol Hill. Thus far, ABC has refused to retract its story. It's beginning to appear that the Abramoff inquery may have some significant ramifications that are yet to be aired. In light of Goss' ouster and the strong Congressional resistance to the Jefferson raid, one begins to wonder what the probe is unearthing.

By the way, J, I hope that you are amassing ideas for your new entries once your blog service is back online.

I am, James, but I will have forgotten them or they'll no longer be relevant by the time my blog comes back up again.

I'm just in awe at the way Republicans have screwed this thing up.  Wow.  It's the equivalent of announcing to Barry Bonds that you are throwing a fastball over the plate, then throwing the fastball over the plate, and then Barry Bonds deciding to bend down and tie his shoe and take the strike.  Can you tell I'm pissed off at the House Leadership?

Joseph, I agree that the House leadership has a tin ear on the Jefferson issue. Happily, Senate Majority Leader Frist has a more responsive take on the matter.
